A radiation oncology patient positioning and immobilization device manufacturer has announced a new lightweight patient positioning device for proton therapy and conventional radiation therapy facilities.

Strong lightweight positioning equipment can help therapists while navigating the patient and the positioning bag, especially in complex cases such as those involving the abdomen and the thorax, or when patients cannot raise both arms above their head.

The Z-System was developed by ZDi Solutions, LLC (Knoxville, TN, USA) and consists of the Z-Box, Z-Square and Z-Tilt. The Z-Box is used during the fabrication of an immobilization foam mold, mostly for Computed Tomography (CT) simulation. The can be adjusted freely for different arm positions and has side ‘wings’ that can be adjusted to support the arms of the patient. There is also an adjustable extension for accurate casting of the hands and forearms. Precise reproducibility of the patients arm position is important treatment alignment in proton therapy. The Z-System ensures that the patient is positioned within 2mm of the original treatment plan, ensuring accurate delivery of the radiation dose to the tumor, and decreasing patient exposure risk.

John Hawkins, CEO of ZDi, said, "We are very excited to introduce this product to the radiation oncology community. We believe it represents a breakthrough in more accurate immobilization of patients and this, ultimately, translates to better cancer treatment outcomes. This technology is needed by every cancer treatment center as a way better standardize patient set-ups and ensure that tumor sites receive optimal dosage. Our devices do just this and provide therapists straightforward methods to create patient treatment molds that are consistent, safe, and accurate every time."
