Mobile Angiography System Eliminates Ceiling Rails

A new rail-free mobile angiography imaging system uses a sophisticated gantry that travels on predefined paths with absolute precision.

The Discovery IGS 740 system uses an un-tethered, laser-guided gantry that carries a wide bore C-arm with dedicated arm-imaging positions to create ease in imaging the anatomy of interest, with full patient access from either left or right. The mobile gantry also helps image larger patients, as well as perform off center three dimensional (3D) acquisitions. The gantry can be moved to the table to image any part of the anatomy, and then powered back out of the way, to precise pre-chosen positions. A rotating laser continuously scans the room so that the system knows where it is at all times.

By eliminating the ceiling rails, installation and positioning of operating room (OR) ceiling-mounted ancillaries such as monitors, radiation shields, and lights become simpler and more flexible. The Discovery IGS 740 is provided with controls available at tableside and at the back of the gantry to maneuver the system easily and conveniently. The system comes with nine preset positions and up to eleven predefined back-out locations. Two customizable automatic parking positions can be also be programmed to accommodate multiple room sizes and shapes.

The Discovery IGS 740 system is provided with a 41x41-cm detector panel that enables imaging of large organs such as the liver and simultaneous coverage of both legs. In addition, the system comes equipped with more than 20 advanced applications, such as FlightPlan for Liver, which helps clinicians identify tumor-feeding vessels for selective liver embolization. The Discovery IGS 740 system is a product of GE Healthcare (Little Chalfont, United Kingdom), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Our goal is to pioneer a solution designed to free interventional radiologists from traditional constraints,” said Chantal Le Chat, general manager of GE Healthcare premium angiography. “With the enhanced mobility of the Discovery IGS 740, clinicians have full freedom to operate, and we believe this can revolutionize the field of interventional imaging.”
