Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography and siRNA Molecules Used as Nano-Guides to the Liver

Highly specific nanoparticles have been developed that, depending on the bound dye, are guided to the liver or to the kidney and designed to deliver their cargo of active ingredients directly to the targeted tissue.  More...

Photoacoustic Imaging Optimizes Visualization of Cancerous Tissues Using Time Reversal Technology

Unique time-reversal technology is being used to better focus light in tissue, such as muscles and organs. Current high-resolution optical imaging technology allows researchers to see about 1-mm-deep into the body. In an effort to enhance this imaging technology, the investigators are employing photoacoustic imaging, which combines light with acoustic waves (sound), to form a clearer image, even several centimeters into the skin.  More...

Image: Photoacoustic/ultrasound images taken with the new system show a human finger joint from different angles. The images on the right (b and d) show anatomic structures revealed by the ultrasound. The images on the left (a and c) show the photoacoustics data overlaying the ultrasound data. The bright yellow and red at the top of the finger show the skin and blood vessels running parallel to the finger (Photo courtesy of Pim van den Berg/Khalid Daoudi).

Handheld Probe Generates Precise Images Without Bulky, Costly Instruments

A new handheld probe developed by university and industry researchers in the Netherlands and France could give clinicians useful new imaging capabilities that fit in the palms of their hands. A technology that once filled up a whole lab bench has been shrunken down to a computer screen and a small probe approximately the size of a stapler.   More...
