A large multinational healthcare corporation has announced the acquisition of a digital pathology image analysis company based in Northern Ireland.

The acquisition is intended to expand the digital pathology portfolio of the multinational company with tissue pathology and image analysis software, and educational resources.

PathXL (Belfast, Northern Ireland) was acquired by Royal Philips (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). The adoption of digital pathology is increasing and many pathology laboratories are becoming digital to help them handle new precision medicine diagnostic tests. Pathology labs are an important part of the workflow for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and many other diseases. PathXL develops digital pathology software for research and educational purposes, with the aim to lead the adoption of digital pathology using web-based software workflow solutions.

Russ Granzow, general manager of Philips Digital Pathology Solutions, said, “With this acquisition, we are accelerating our drive to support global medical institutions in their transition to digitized pathology workflows. Together with PathXL we see a unique opportunity to amplify our combined technology leadership positions. We will be able to offer an intelligent and integrated solution that fulfills many needs in computational pathology, education, workflow solutions and image analytics. These important and growing disciplines within pathology will enable a high-quality quantitative analysis of digital whole slide images.”
