Emerging Focused Ultrasound Technology Expected to help Revolutionize Neurological Care
By MedImaging International staff writers Posted on 10 May 2015 |
Transcranial focused ultrasound, guided by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and focused ultrasound used with microbubbles, have been named one of 12 emerging technologies that have the potential to revolutionize neurological and psychiatric care over the next ten years.
The selection was made by more than 50 neuroscience experts, and an academic panel at the World Medical Information Forum (Boston, MA, USA) that took place at the end of April 2015.
The forum was organized by Partners Healthcare (Boston, MA, USA), one of the USA’s leading biomedical research organizations. Focused ultrasound was selected because it can be used to precisely target tissue deep in the body without surgery or harmful radiation, and causes potentially less pain, has fewer risks, and enables a faster recovery.
According to Partners Healthcare, “Focused ultrasound has the ability to revolutionize the treatment of conditions such as brain cancer and Alzheimer’s through its potential for greater precision and faster patient recovery.”
