General/Advanced Imaging

Electrical Impedance Tomography Developed to Identify Brain Hemorrhaging in Preterm Babies

A new US grant is helping researchers to develop a device that not only monitors preterm infants’ delicate brains, but also identifies intraventricular bleeding as soon as it begins. More...

Image: Shown is an optical mammography image of hemoglobin oxygenation of a duct carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a breast cancer in the lining of the milk ducts that has not yet invaded nearby tissues. In this image, the boxed area corresponds to the cancer location and indicates lower values of hemoglobin oxygenation. For cancerous tissue that is associated with abnormal hemoglobin concentration and oxygenation, optical mammography can be used to help diagnose breast cancer and also indicate how well a patient responds to breast cancer chemotherapy (Photo courtesy of Tufts University Medical Center).

Optical Mammography Effectively Diagnoses Breast Cancer

New optical imaging technology could provide clinicians with strategies to both identify breast cancer and track individual patients’ response to initial treatment of the disease. More...

Noninvasive, High-Definition Optical Coherence Tomography Images Epidermal, Dermal Skin in Three Viewing Modes

New high-resolution technology provides three-dimensional imaging of the epidermal and dermal skin layers in three different viewing modes. More...

Image: An early prototype of the handheld scanner has both OCT and video imaging capabilities and interchangeable tips for the eyes, ears, skin and oral tissue. As one example, the device images the retina and the anterior eye structures (bottom right) (Photo courtesy of the University of Illinois).

Handheld Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging Device Developed for Primary Care Physicians

A new handheld scanner for primary care physicians would enable them to image all the areas they typically study, such as bacterial colonies in the middle ear in 3D, or monitor the thickness and health of patients’ retinas, and more. More...

Image: A new technique called dynamic diffuse optical tomography imaging (DDOT) is intended to provide earlier diagnosis in patients with peripheral artery disease (Photo courtesy of Columbia University).

Contrast-Free Dynamic Diffuse Optical Tomography Imaging for Peripheral Artery Disease Shows Potential

Peripheral artery disease is a frequent result of out of control diabetes in which an earlier diagnosis would be extremely helpful for thousands, long before effective intervention becomes ineffective. More...

Image: With the 190M Medical ScopeMeter handheld oscilloscope, the complicated data analysis required to test imaging equipment is simple to learn, easy to use and quick to complete (Photo courtesy of PRNewsFoto / Fluke Corporation).

Portable Oscilloscope Easily Performs Complex Data Analysis to Test Imaging Equipment

A tester combines the capabilities of a digital multimeter with the performance of a bench oscilloscope and digital data storage/analysis of a paperless recorder so that a field technician can rapidly identify the cause of problems. More...

Specialized Noninvasive Imaging Technology Successfully Used to Examine Epilepsy Patients

A study outlines how a new type of noninvasive brain scan taken immediately after a seizure gives important insight into possible causes and treatments for epilepsy patients and may lead to means of meeting the long-sought challenge of locating the brain regions responsible for seizures in individual patients. More...
