New Real-Time Radiation Dosimeter Unveiled

The new device is designed for wearability, increased measurement accuracy, and a longer life cycle, and can be used for low-dose procedures, and even in hybrid Operating Room (OR) environments.

The real-time dosimetry solution helps clinicians and hospital staff track their X-Ray exposure, in real time, on a monitor, with the help of bar graphs, and adapt their behavior accordingly to minimize unnecessary radiation exposure.

Unfors RaySafe, a Fluke Biomedical company developed the new RaySafe i3 device. RaySafe has developed and produced X-Ray quality assurance solutions since 2012. The devices are used to track and visualize radiation exposure and promote radiation safety.

Regulatory bodies are keen to reduce the radiation doses medical staff and patients are exposed to, and promote the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) standard for this purpose. Clinicians undergo radiation safety training, but the dynamic nature of the working environment may lead to higher than necessary radiation exposure. The RaySafe devices provide medical staff with real-time insight into their personal exposure, and empower them to use the existing radiation reduction solutions they already have access to.

Personal dosimetry business area manager at RaySafe, Bart Leclou, said, "RaySafe i3 helps keep the medical staff in-the-know, at all times, about the level of radiation exposure, for themselves and their colleagues, in real-time. The decision to implement the RaySafe i3 shows a commitment and dedication by a department to keep their staff safe from excessive radiation exposure."
