A medical science institute in India plans to purchase six brachytherapy systems and seven linear accelerators.

The purchase is India’s largest public investment in the healthcare sector, and includes a treatment planning system, and a radiation oncology information system. The institute is expanding its services to offer the new sophisticated cancer treatment equipment at seven sites in India. The equipment will begin shipping in March 2017. Around 4,000 new patients visit the institute to receive radiotherapy treatments every year.

The agreement between the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS; New Delhi, India) and the human care company Elekta (Stockholm, Sweden) will include seven Versa HD linear accelerators, and six microSelectron brachytherapy systems, the MOSAIQ radiation oncology information system, the Monaco treatment planning system, and service for the hardware and software provided. Elekta develops tools and treatment planning systems for radiation therapy, radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and brain disorders, and workflow enhancement software for cancer care.

Manikandan Bala, managing director, Elekta in India, said, “According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, India has more than one million new cancer cases every year. However, the country is making great progress in developing its cancer care and we are honored that AIIMS has chosen Elekta to contribute to this. This agreement demonstrates Elekta’s commitment to making radiation therapy available where it is needed most.”
