An imaging vendor has announced the release of a new mammography unit with the capability of diagnosing patients with dense breast tissue using Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT).

The new DBT technology can create 3-D volume reconstructions of the breast and resolve microcalcifications in blood vessels in overlapping breast tissue, and eliminate motion blur and artifact intrusion.

The Planmed Clarity 3D system was developed by Planmed (Helsinki, Finland). The system was designed to facilitate diagnostic imaging, and biopsy procedures, and includes features that help speed up the screening workflow, as well as to maximize patient comfort during an exam and reduce patient anxiety. The system also includes usability innovations for radiologists, such as dual touch screens that adapt to available imaging modes.

The system has a small footprint that makes it suitable for installation in confined spaces, and takes power from a standard wall outlet. Planmed can also tailor the color of the Clarity 3D using a selection of color schemes, to enable clients to adapt the system for their personal needs.

Vesa Mattila, managing director of Planmed, said, “The incidence rate of breast cancer, the most common invasive cancer among women, continues to increase in both developed and developing countries. However, breast cancer related mortality has visibly decreased in countries with screening programs. This can be explained by early detection and improved diagnostic and treatment methods”.
