CT colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is a noninvasive imaging procedure that uses computed tomography (CT) to obtain an accurate interior view of the large intestine that is otherwise only seen with an invasive procedure where an endoscope is inserted into the rectum and passed through the entire colon.

Bracco Imaging, SpA (Milan, Italy), a world-leading company in the medical imaging business and part of the Bracco Group, announced, through Eisai Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) and its diagnostic subsidiary EIDIA Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan), to have received approval to manufacture and market PROTOCO2L in Japan, the first carbon dioxide insufflation system for use in Japan, as a medical device in CT colonography.

“The Japan approval of PROTOCO2L strengthens our longstanding collaboration with Eisai and demonstrates our commitment to provide customers with solutions that meet patients’ medical needs and facilitate clinical success. Moreover, it further fulfills and sustains Eisai corporate mission of human healthcare [hhc], across its four Japan business segments comprising diagnostics, prescription pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare products, and generics,” said Fulvio Renoldi Bracco, head of the global business unit imaging of Bracco.

Bracco Imaging supports a comprehensive product line for the practitioners performing CT colonography. Offering the right tools and resources, the full set of solutions helps ensure better tolerated and successful virtual colonoscopy examinations.

The key reason for performing CT colonography is to effectively and effectively screen for tumors in the large intestine. The PROTOCO2L device provides a controlled insufflation of carbon dioxide during CT colonoscopy. Carbon dioxide is more rapidly absorbed than room air and helps minimize the patient’s post-procedure bloating and cramping. PROTOCO2L helps reduce staff time during the colon insufflation process and enhances productivity. Automated insufflation helps ensure adequate and consistent distension in a patient- and operator-independent manner. It also features a specially designed small tip for patient comfort, as well as safety features to help protect against over-insufflation.
