Image: In DMD muscles, light-colored fat cells invade the deep-colored cells of healthy muscle, creating a different ultrasound signature that can be converted into easy-to-understand values or signals to be displayed by a device to be used for monitoring muscle health (Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons).

Low-Resolution Ultrasound Used to Measure Muscle Health

People suffering from muscular dystrophy could one day assess the effectiveness of their medication with the help of a smartphone-linked device. The new study used a new way to process ultrasound imaging data that could lead to hand-held devices to provide fast, effective medical information.   More...

Image: A new type of medical imaging technology could diagnose cardiovascular disease by measuring ultrasound signals from molecules exposed to a fast-pulsing laser. The system, called intravascular photoacoustic imaging, takes precise three-dimensional images of plaques lining arteries and identifies deposits that are likely to rupture and cause heart attacks. This cross-sectional view of an artery shows lipids (green) deposited inside the arterial wall. Black and white indicate contrast showing the cross-sectional geometry (Photo courtesy of Purdue University).

Intravascular Photoacoustic Imaging Technology Designed for Diagnosing Heart Disease

Researchers are close to bringing to market a new type of medical imaging technology that could detect cardiovascular disease by measuring ultrasound signals from molecules exposed to a fast-pulsing laser.  More...

Image: Using ultrasound technology to visualize the tongue’s shape and movement can help children with difficulty pronouncing “r” sounds, according to research led by NYU Steinhardt assistant professor Tara McAllister Byun (Photo courtesy of Ramsay de Give/NYU Steinhardt).

Ultrasound Used to Help Children with Speech Problems

Ultrasound technology is being used to visualize the tongue’s shape and movement, and can help children with difficulty pronouncing “r” sounds, according to a small study. The ultrasound intervention was effective when children were allowed to make different shapes with their tongue in order to produce the “r” sound, instead of being instructed to make a specific shape.  More...
