A new flat detector for X-Ray imaging and intended for combined endoscopy and ultrasound imaging has been announced by a large medical imaging systems manufacturer.

The detector has a field-of-view of 30 cm x 30 cm that enables it to cover an anatomical environment 160% larger than standard image intensifiers, without moving the mobile C-arm. The detector also provides improved grayscale differentiation and a high-resolution 1500 by 1500 pixel display.

The new detector for the Cios Fusion C-arm was announced by Siemens Healthineers (Erlangen, Germany) and can be used together with the Modularis lithotripter urological shock wave unit.

The new detector provides urologists with a single image and a faster overview of the urinary tract, higher image quality, and a reduced radiation dose. The SmartView function enables endoscopy, ultrasound or other imaging sources to be connected for visual support. The user can store the images directly in the digital patient folder.

Guido Bendl, senior physician, at the Prosper-Hospital urological clinic (Recklinghausen, Germany), said, "Image quality is very good. I find the image using the flat detector significantly better than the C-arm image intensifier we've been using up until now. I can reliably view and assess stones, anatomical structures, and areas not filled by contrast medium. And with the larger field of view I can now see three-quarters of the urinary system on the screen, while before it was only a fraction of that."
