Electromagnetic Positioning and Real-Time Surface Tracking System for Radiotherapy Approved for Use in Europe

An electromagnetic positioning and real-time surface transmitter can be used anywhere on the outside of the body, where motions during radiation treatment needs to be detected or monitored. An example for use of the device is during respiratory motions, which are important to monitor during radiotherapy of, for instance, left-sided breast cancer.

Micropos Medical, AB (Gothenburg, Sweden) has received European approval for a new product, the RayPilot surface transmitter. The product is another device that extends the functionality of RayPilot, which originally was designed for internal prostate tracking.

“We have since the start of Micropos had a clear goal to broaden the use of RayPilot. During 2014, we had more interest than ever and now radiotherapy clinics have started to use RayPilot in hypofractionated prostate treatments. A gating interface for Varian [Palo Alto, CA, USA] Clinacs has been released, and now we are also presenting a new product for external tracking. The release of the surface transmitter means that the clinic can spread their RayPilot investment and learning on a larger patient base,” said Tomas Gustafsson, CEO of Micropos Medical.

The RayPilot system is an electromagnetic positioning and real time tracking system for a fast and objective set-up and for continuous positioning during radiotherapy. A precise and safe localization of the tumor can dramatically improve the outcome of the treatment, particularly for hypofractionated protocols. The system consists principally of three parts; one transmitter that is placed close by the tumor, a receiving system that is placed directly on the treatment couch-top and software that continuously shows the precise tumor location, and hence where to focus the linac beam. RayPilot has a unique gating solution qualified and compatible for use with Varian’s Clinac iX linear accelerators and Trilogy systems.

RayPilot is CE certified for prostate and general external use.
