Philips Healthcare (Best, The Netherlands) and Unfors RaySafe, AB (Billdal, Sweden) have signed a joint development agreement that will focus on the development of the next-generation Philips DoseAware system, with the goal of providing streamlined access and communication between Philips DoseAware and Philips Allura interventional X-ray systems.

“With the launch of DoseAware in 2010, and the introduction of real-time dosimetry, together with Philips we were able to establish a new gold standard for the management of dose in the interventional X-ray environment. Through this new agreement, we aim to make further significant advances by integrating real-time dosimetry within the interventional X-ray system itself, which has the potential to further improve radiation dose management for those performing and managing these complex procedures,” commented Magnus Kristoferson, chief executive officer of Unfors RaySafe, AB.

Philips is a worldwide developer of angiographic systems for cardiology labs. The Philips Allura Xper system provides excellent image quality for diagnosing and treating cardiac disease. Through this new collaboration, Philips and RaySafe are focused on developing an Allura X-ray environment with an integrated real-time dosimetry solution, providing staff with improved, personalized and directly accessible dose information.

“As a leading innovator in image-guided interventional solutions, we continuously look for ways to manage radiation dose whilst improving outcomes for complex interventional procedures. By integrating the DoseAware functionality with our Allura Xper offering, we will be able to both simplify and improve real-time staff dose information,” said Bert van Meurs, senior vice president and general manager of Philips interventional X-ray. “This collaboration with RaySafe is yet another example of our commitment to further enhancing radiation safety.”

Philips DoseAware provides instant, time-stamped feedback in the examination room so that one can immediately adjust working habits to decrease radiation exposure. The user can see when and where radiation dose was acquired on a personalized dose meter so the appropriate action can be taken during a procedure. The exposure level can easily be checked with one look at the colored display in the examination room, and even have the option to e-mail a full radiation dose report at the end of each examination.

Philips Healthcare is developer of cardiac care, acute care, and home healthcare solutions.

Unfors RaySafe is a leading supplier of radiation measurement solutions in the medical field. Products range from personal dosimetry to quality assurance diagnostic X-ray equipment.
