Digital Radiography Technology Combines Lower Dosage and Enhanced Image Quality

New digital radiology (DR) technology was designed to provide a very high level of image quality while reducing the amount of radiation patients and medical staff receives during X-ray procedures.

InfiMed (Liverpool, NY, USA), an international developer of medical imaging software, has released its fourth generation of digital radiography imaging technology, the i4 DR. "Our primary goal during the development process of i4 DR was to create a new platform that would address the needs of safety and quality that were identified through extensive research with technicians and doctors, medical facility administrators, and original equipment manufacturers [OEMs],” said Amy Ryan, president of InfiMed. With i4 DR we have developed a technology that will get the best shot, on the first shot, using dosage levels that are much lower than what is currently accepted by the [U.S.] FDA [Food and Drug Administration].”

The technology behind i4 DR's excellent image quality is the recently developed InfiVision Automatic Image Enhancement software. InfiVision's one-click image processing allows for the best possible image quality on the first shot. It utilizes sophisticated image processing algorithms and automatically applies optimal image shutters. Images can then be fine-tuned using automatic image processing settings optimized for bone, soft tissue, and organs.

Moreover, the i4 DR features a highly customizable clinical workflow with graphical user interface- (GUI)-integrated generator controls that allow for optimized X-ray and image processing parameters. i4 DR also eliminates the generator console creating a cleaner, more efficient workspace.

The i4 DR was designed with the OEM business model in mind in that it can interface with a range of flat panel detectors, and is flexible, adaptable, upgradeable, and configurable for use with next generation flat panel detectors for faster speed to market. This enables i4 DR to lower the total cost of ownership compared to similar systems.

InfiMed presented the i4 DR system at the 2009 European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna, Austria, March 6-10, 2009.

InfiMed is a developer of digital medical acquisition, image processing, and sensor solutions. These systems are used in hospital cath labs, X-ray departments, imaging centers, and trauma centers worldwide. InfiMed also collaborates on a global scale with a wide range of OEMs and dealers, providing a full complement of engineering and research and development resources for development and integration of the latest medical technology.
