Shantou University (Shantou, Guangdong Province, China) Medical College's Affiliated-Cancer Hospital is China's first cancer treatment center to install Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (Varian; Palo Alto, CA, USA) TrueBeam system for image-guided radiotherapy. The TrueBeam machine was dedicated in a special ceremony and was donated to the hospital by the Li Ka Shing Foundation (Hong Kong SAR, China), a private charity that supports educational reforms and helps to advance medical research and services.

Prof. Zhang Guojun, the hospital director said, "This advanced technology, combined with our physicians' expertise and commitment in patient care, will offer a new chapter of possibilities in our long and hard battle against cancer."

Varian's TrueBeam treats tumors with increased speed and accuracy and features a wide variety of technical innovations that dynamically synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery during treatments for cancer. The system makes it possible to reduce treatment time significantly, and potentially increase the number of patients treated.

"The TrueBeam system is Varian's most advanced offering for dealing with tumor motion, which makes it especially well-suited for treating cancer of the lung and liver, two types that occur commonly in China," said Tom Duffy, head of Varian's oncology systems business in Asia. "Varian is pleased to be working with the Li Ka Shing Foundation in bringing the first TrueBeam to China."
