New Preclinical Cryogen-Free 4.7-T MRI System Revealed

A new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner uses an innovative dry magnet design with low running costs, and a standard low-temperature refrigerator, instead of liquid helium, to cool the magnet to the required 4 K.

The magnetic field strength of the scanner can be adjusted from 0.1– 4.7 T, according to the researcher’s requirements. The new 4.7-T scanner is available with a bore size of 17 cm. The scanner provides high imaging performance with a stray field of only a few centimeters, for placement adjacent to other scanners, and in Class 3 and 4 laboratories. The scanner is intended for soft-tissue contrast, and molecular imaging research.

The 4.7-T scanner is one of a range of scanners developed by MR Solutions (Guildford, Surrey, UK), the world’s largest independent developer and manufacturer of commercially available MRI technology. The scanners are designed to facilitate multimodality imaging, including optical, and Computed Tomography (CT) capabilities. MR Solutions also provides PET-MRI or SPECT-MRI imaging, either for independent, simultaneous, or sequential acquisition. MR Solutions expects that multimodality imaging will become the norm for the study of anatomy, bio-distribution, efficacy, safety and kinetics within the same anatomical context.

CEO of MR Solutions, Dr David Taylor, said: “Although we already had the 3 T and 7 T preclinical MRI systems commercially available, the addition of the new 4.7 T is based upon what our customers are telling us that they want. With this new system customers now have greater flexibility when choosing preclinical MRI multi-modality systems.”
