A next-generation 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system provides excellent intrinsic homogeneity by employing a new magnet technology. The technology also provides excellent image quality even in the most difficult examination requirements such as off-center imaging or in a large field-of-view requiring fat-free images.

Toshiba Medical Systems Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) presented its new 1.5 T MRI system at the Journées Françaises de la Radiologie (French Radiology Congress), held in Paris (France) from October the 18-22, 2013. With more than 1,700 systems already installed worldwide, the Vantage range of MRI scanners provided a strong technologic basis for the new design of the Vantage Elan.

The developers of the system have improved the comfort of the scanning procedure by introducing a new technology called Pianissimo Σ, which substantially reduces the noise for the patient and the operator. The new light coil design with Octave SPEEDER technology provides easier set up and a more comfortable experience for the patient without sacrificing image quality. Feet first examination technique also helps to reduce patient anxiety. Finally, the new bore aperture, short length magnet and air flow system, provides the patient with a comfortable place to have their examination with less stress.

The new technology now makes it possible to perform a full body noncontrast MR angiography (MRA). Toshiba developed the technique to remove the need to use expensive and potentially harmful contrast media while still providing contrast in the images. Toshiba has saved users from choosing to inject contrast media in their patients while giving them even better information without the problems that contrast can cause in obscuring fine details.

Toshiba’s M-Power software allows the user to rapidly and easily learn and access all of sophisticated software techniques. With high SPEEDER factors and the ability to use versatile 16ch Flex coils, one can get the best images in the least time with the greatest comfort for patients. Atlas Compass technology selects the best elements to perform the imaging procedure.

More importantly, the Vantage Elan is eco-friendly as this system strongly reduces it power consumption through the Eco mode. In conventional MRI systems, power is supplied to various subsystems even while in standby mode in order to maintain a stable system operation. The Vantage Elan provides a novel Eco mode in which power is supplied to fewer subsystems while maintaining stable operation, simultaneously saving money and helping the environment.

The Vantage Elan only requires 23 square meters for a complete installation accomplished in only one week. The system maximizes performance while reducing space requirement, establishing a new segment for the 1.5T image space.
