True to its slogan, “connecting the world of ultrasound” a joint meeting will appeal to dedicated specialists in ultrasound as well as novices with an interest in learning more about all facets of ultrasound technology.

WFUMB 2011 is the unique joint meeting of the 13th World Congress of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB; Laurel, MD, USA), the 23rd Congress of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB; London, UK), and the 35th Joint Meeting of the Austrian Ultrasound in Medicine (ÖGUM), German (DEGUM), and Swiss Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine (SGUM). It will take place August 26-29, 2011, at the Austria Center in Vienna (Austria).

The educational program was put together in collaboration with all WFUMB 2011 subcommittees, comprising members of all involved societies. It addresses all aspects of ultrasound imaging, from gynecology, pediatrics, gastroenterology, to veterinary science. Points of focus will include tumor assessment with contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound (CE-EUS), ultrasound in sports imaging, subharmonic imaging, new technology in elastography, and recent developments in breast ultrasound.

One highlight of WFUMB 2011 that should definitely not be missed is the opening lecture by Dr. Thomas Hildebrandt, from Berlin, Germany, about his experiences with unusual patients in the field of veterinary ultrasound.

A focused educational program offers full day categorical courses on August 26, 2011. Of these, Emergency ultrasound, ultrasound of the Breast, new ultrasound techniques, Pediatric ultrasound, Musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound in Oncology, and ultrasound of the GI Tract will be delivered in English. Refresher courses and live scanning workshops will be offered to cater for all, from beginners to experts, from Saturday to Monday.

Hands-on learning is delivered in various lectures including the use of modern ultrasound simulators. Six hundred world-renowned speakers will deliver lectures in 11 categorical courses, 90 refresher courses, 100 live scanning workshops, 37 scientific sessions, and 300 poster presentations. The educational and scientific program is complemented by a large technical exhibition, where all major companies will be represented.

The official social program will offer enough time for interdisciplinary communication and relaxation, with an Opening Concert and get-together in the Austria Center Vienna, an open-air wine festival in beautiful Gumpoldskirchen, a small village south of Vienna, and a reception at the Viennese city hall.
