According to a recent agreement, Nuclear Associates (Carle Place, NY, USA) will exclusively offer the MultiRad medical film digitizers of Howtek, Inc. (Hudson, NH, USA) with Nuclear Associates' medical imaging products and systems. These products and systems, including Gafchromic Media and PACS, are used in the planning, measurement, and monitoring of radiation treatment programs.

Howtek MultiRad digitizers have an extended 3.85 optical density (OD) range, offering the ability to see more in the dark regions of a film, and a spatial resolution of up to 5.75 lp/mm and 11.5 lp/mm, offering the ability to see more structural detail in the images. The MultiRad family features new technology in analog-to-digital conversion software and a patent-pending Red LED (light-emitting diode) solid-state illumination system. Howtek says this ensures that diagnostic image quality is available consistently from edge to edge, top to bottom, scan to scan.

Testing requested by Nuclear Associates at a leading university showed that superior results were produced when using Gafchromic Media and the Howtek MultiRad 460 digitizer. These results will be presented at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) 2001. "Howtek's MultiRad digitizers are designed to offer image quality, dependability, and value superior to that available from digitizers using older laser or fluorescent illumination technologies,” said Martin Ratner, vice president and general manager of Nuclear Associates.
