Planar Systems, Inc. (Beaverton, OR, USA), a worldwide developer in flat-panel display systems, is partnering with leading graphics systems provider Matrox Graphics, Inc. (Dorval, Canada), to bring OpenGL and DirectX standards to Planar's Dome E2 and E3 displays for diagnostic imaging applications in the healthcare market.

This resulting partnership will offer Planar's picture archiving and communications system (PACS) vendors and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) the ability to provide sophisticated graphics capabilities with long-term technical support to hospital information technology (IT) departments and radiologists using Dome displays. Medical imaging customers require graphics controllers for the latest in accelerated three-dimensional (3D) and volumetric rendering, 2D color imaging, and image fusion. The Matrox Graphics display controller boards enable Planar to bring these capabilities to its Dome displays.

"Planar is a recognized leader in diagnostic imaging, which is an established and growing market,” said George Rigas, business development manager, medical imaging, Matrox Graphics. "Through this partnership, we now have access to a broad customer base in the healthcare industry, and Planar's customers can benefit from our advanced graphics controllers for the latest diagnostic imaging applications.”

Dome displays with Matrox Graphics display controller boards will be available at the end of March 2006 and come with Dome CXtra software, which monitors, controls, and adjusts DICOM calibration of the displays to the users' desired luminance across all gray levels.
