Vital Images, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA) has signed an agreement with Confirma, Inc. (Kirkland, WA, USA) to distribute CADstream, in conjunction with Vitrea 2, Vital Images software, beginning in the summer of 2005. Vitrea 2 software system creates two-dimensional (2D), 3D, and 4D images of human anatomy computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) image data.

CADstream is a breast MRI computer-aided detection (CAD) system. "We're very pleased to partner with Confirma, a leading player in CAD and breast imaging,” reported Jay D. Miller, president and CEO of Vital Images. "Confirma's technology offers significant advancements in assessing breast disease and a sizeable market opportunity. Offering CADstream is a perfect fit with our strategy of expanding CAD options within Vitrea.”

Clinical indications for breast MRI scans continue to expand as clinicians increasingly recognize the benefit of this technology. Breast MRI is principally used for determining the extent of disease, assessing response to therapy in breast cancer patients and screening high-risk individuals. Clinical studies have reported that MRI shows high sensitivity for identifying invasive breast cancer. There is strong evidence that breast MRI studies can be effective detecting tumors in women at high risk for breast cancer.

"As the market continues its expansive growth, distribution partnerships with market-leading companies such as Vital Images enable us to expand our reach,” remarked Wayne Wagner, president and CEO of Confirma. "The distribution of CADstream through Vital Images is an excellent way to meet the growing demand for CAD in breast MRI. Vital Images and Confirma have a common goal, which is to meet the imaging needs of our customers. I believe this partnership achieves that goal.”
