Biophan Technologies (Rochester, NY, USA), a developer of next-generation biomedical technology, is continuing the growth of its intellectual property portfolio by reaching a total of 114 patients issued or filed in a variety of advanced biomedical fields.

With these patents, the company continues its development of advanced systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) safety and image compatibility for surgical instruments and implanted devices. Biophan now holds a total of 34 issued patents, eight approved for subsequent issuance, with the remaining 72 undergoing the patent assessment process. The latest additions to the company's intellectual property portfolio include two newly issued patents and six filed patent applications.

"Biophan has been continuing to aggressively execute its business strategy of protecting its next-generation intellectual property portfolio with broad patents that are designed to provide us control of important biomedical markets,” said Michael Weiner, CEO of Biophan. "Our latest issued patents further expand on recently issued patents involving the fields of photonics and nonmagnetic coatings. These technologies can be used to improve safety and visualization in MRI environments and for a new class of drug-eluting applications.”

The six new patent applications involve several areas, including the company's ceramic-based MRI-compatible Squiggle motor, which it is developing with its technology partner, New Scale Technologies (Victor, NY, USA). Other new patent applications cover major areas in the development of nonmagnetic coatings that are designed to improve visualization and safety of implanted medical devices, such as catheters and stents, within MRI-environments.
