Hologic Announces Contract for DirectRay Systems

A contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA, Washington, DC, USA) for direct-to-digital radiographic systems and related equipment has been announced by Hologic, Inc. (Bedford, MA, USA). The equipment is for use in VA medical centers and other government healthcare facilities.

The VA award was based on best value and the unique capability of Hologic's proprietary flat panel technology, DirectRay (DR), said Hologic. DirectRay utilizes amorphous selenium, which allows the capture and conversion of x-rays to electrical signals in a single step, avoiding any resolution deterioration inherent from light scatter in indirect technologies such as conventional film or computed radiography systems. The award included two Hologic digital x-ray systems, the Radex, designed for ambulatory and outpatient radiography, and the Epex, used for the full range of general radiography exams. The contract also includes digital upgrades built around the Hologic detector.

"Government hospitals such as the VA are leading the way to a filmless environment,” stated David Ellenbogen, chairman and CEO of Hologic. "They recognize that DR systems provide outstanding image quality and provide a far greater return on investment by increasing productivity and facilitating optimum use of PACS technology.”
