A new mobile device application provides users of the eFilm Workstation v3.3 secure access to worklists and studies from their iPhone or iPod touch, bringing many key components of medical imaging workflow to the palm of their hand.

Merge Healthcare (Milwaukee, WI, USA), a health information technology (IT) solutions provider, announced the release of eFilm Mobile, a new extension of the eFilm Workstation franchise. "It is a unique and well-thought out application that was easy to set-up and easy to use,” said Dr. Roman Klufas at Open MRI of New England (Warwick, RI, USA). "The real value is having the ability to see my worklist and take action, from anywhere, via my iPhone. I depend upon my eFilm Workstation to get my reads done, but there are always time-sensitive studies that require immediate attention no matter where I am. eFilm Mobile will allow me to control eFilm from the palm of my hand, and direct eFilm to forward the study to a radiologist who is available to read the study on their diagnostic workstation, without disrupting whatever I am doing. It's a huge timesaver.”

To utilize the knowledge base of its vast eFilm user community, Merge has launched a submission form on its eFilm Community web site for users to post the creative ways in which they plan on using eFilm Mobile to improve their workflow. Users who submit their entries will be entered into a drawing for one of several new Apple iPad devices. "Our new application has such a potential to effect major lifestyle change for radiologists and those involved in their workflow,” said Nancy Koenig, Merge president, "that we expect our users will be able post many useful tips for the rest of the eFilm community. This is an active and sophisticated group of users, and the feedback we've received so far from our development partners has been very exciting.”

The eFilm Mobile App connects with 3G and wireless networks, allowing users to (1) connect their iPhone to multiple eFilm Workstations; (2) allow multiple iPhone connections to eFilm Workstation; (3) interact with and view worklists remotely and in real time; (4) and view images; including pan, zoom, and window-level.

Remotely control eFilm Workstation to have eFilm send studies to another Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) device. "eFilm Mobile, as well as the underlying mobile technology we developed, expands Merge Healthcare's leadership position in the stand-alone diagnostic workstation market,” said Justin Dearborn, Merge Healthcare CEO. "Responding to the needs of our customers and increasing the value of eFilm Workstation has driven this innovation. We believe it reinforces our leadership in Radiology and in Health IT.”

eFilm Mobile and eFilm Workstation 3.3 are available for use in the United States, with a CE-marked version in development for worldwide distribution.
