Image Enhancement Technology Visualizes Subtle Breast Lesions

A cutting-edge image enhancement technology for subtle breast cancer screening and diagnosis in digital mammograms enables physicians to extract more information from medical images.

The advanced image enhancement (AIE) proprietary image enhancement technology is scalable, platform neutral, and can be applied towards any digital image or image segment that could benefit from improved clarity and detail. The image enhancement algorithms are tailorable, and can provide various levels of enhancement to appeal to a range of radiologist preferences in image display. The core technology for the image enhancement was evolved from proprietary United States Navy signal and image processing software utilized for the detection, classification, and localization of undersea mines with sonar equipment. Future applications of the technology include plans to expand into other radiology applications, including the enhancement of chest X-rays, orthopedic X-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. The Advanced Image Enhancement (AIE, Providence, RI, USA) technology, presented at the Radiological Society of North America's (RSNA) annual meeting--held during November-December 2009 in Chicago (IL, USA)--has been integrated into the workflow tools of the Hologic (Bedford, MA, USA) SecurView diagnostic workstation.

"We are excited to now have our software in the hands of expert physicians for the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Michael Duarte, CEO and founder of AIE. "As a complement to Hologic's SecurView workstations, our software will provide radiologists with the ability to enhance suspicious regions of interest in mammograms with more image quality and detail than ever before. This is particularly important in cases where dense breast tissue is involved, because they present the greatest challenges.”
