Available for facilities that have implemented full-field digital mammography (FFDM), a new breast imaging diagnostic workstation (BIDW) has been developed especially to complement a computed radiography for mammography (FCRM) system and provide better workstation interpretation capabilities for facilities that may use another vendor's picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).

Developed by Fujifilm Medical Systems USA, Inc. (Stamford, CT, USA), the system provides full Synapse PACS functionality. This new standalone workstation is designed to be a supplement to any facility's existing PACS, and meet the need for more clinically and operationally advanced systems to support breast imaging.

"As more and more facilities adopt digital mammography, there is an increased need for PACS that provide the specialized features and advanced technologies that are so vital to the interpretation of full field digital mammography exams,” explained Jim Morgan, Fujifilm's director of network systems. "Synapse is an advanced PACS that is uniquely capable of providing the diagnostic and clinical tools that radiologists demand for FFDM. The breast imaging diagnostic workstation will now enable customers that might already have an existing PACS to benefit from full Synapse capabilities and additional features specifically designed for digital mammography when interpreting their FFDM studies.”

Fujifilm's BIDW was designed with not only clinical, but operational and integration needs in mind. In addition to providing Fujifilm's image quality, it also offers the ability to support computer-aided detection (CAD), MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992) overlays, and provides Fujifilm's patented reading protocol technology for efficient reading workflow. Upon image acquisition all FFDM studies are automatically sent to the BIDW, where image display is available in seconds and prior studies can be accessed for comparison, all ensuring optimal operational efficiency is maintained for radiologists. This functionality is not limited to breast imaging, because it is Synapse PACS. Furthermore, the BIDW can be completely integrated with all other radiology systems, including any mammography specific reporting systems, radiology information systems (RIS), and PACS.

FujiFilm Medical Systems USA is a leading provider of diagnostic imaging products and network systems to meet the needs of healthcare facilities. Fujifilm's Synapse PACS provides a system for managing, storing, and distributing images and information throughout the entire healthcare enterprise. Its Web-integrated design and hardware-independence provide a technologic infrastructure and deployment model that can be expanded upon in a host of ways to adapt to evolving technologies.
