A versatile display system has been designed to further enhance flexibility and productivity in diagnostic imaging. The system introduces the industry's first 30-inch color liquid crystal display (LCD) that can be used as two three-megapixel heads or one wide-screen six-megapixel display. This allows radiologists to read chest X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), cath and echo cardiogram images, or any other combination, side by side on a single diagnostic screen. Barco's (Kortrijk, Belgium) six-megapixel display system, the Coronis Fusion 6MP DL, system now has 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), making it available for commercial distribution in the United States. Barco received its first orders for picture archiving and communications system (PACS) projects in Australia, Korea, and the Netherlands.
"Both original equipment manufacturer [OEM] companies and end-users were excited about the obvious benefits of this versatile, multi-modality display system,” commented Geert Carrein, director of product management at Barco. "We are very pleased that this initial enthusiasm has resulted in a quick adoption in the medical imaging market.”
With the FDA 510(k) clearance in hand, Coronis Fusion 6MP DL is now also commercially available in the United States of America. "To respond to the growing demand for our Coronis Fusion 6MP DL system, we have geared up production and are prepared to ship the product to our customers all over the globe,” said Lynda Domogalla, director of product marketing at Barco.
The new product is the first diagnostic system based on the latest, breakthrough In-Plane Switching Pro (IPS-Pro) LCD technology. Compared to conventional LCD technologies, this IPS-Pro technology has excellent brightness and contrast, even from a wide viewing angle. To achieve the best diagnostic precision, Coronis Fusion 6MP DL also integrates a number of Barco technologies. One of these is the unique diagnostic luminance system, which delivers a Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine- (DICOM)-calibrated luminance of 800 cd/m², allowing for simultaneous reading of color, grayscale, and fused modalities. Coronal views, for instance, can now be combined with smaller MIPS and volume-rendered images on the same screen to facilitate diagnostic decisions.
Coronis Fusion 6MP DL comes with the latest version of Barco's web-based solution for quality assurance (QA). Combined with Barco's patented I-Guard sensor, MediCal QAWeb ensures fully automated image QA with no need for human intervention. MediCal QAWeb tracks, maintains, and logs viewing performance, automates QA tasks, initiates display system calibration, and establishes an accurate DICOM Look-Up Table calibration.
The new Coronis Fusion 6MP DL display system was presented at this year's European Congress of Radiology, from March 7-11, 2008, in Vienna, Austria. The system comes standard with a five-year warranty.
