New imaging display technology provides a stable color image from any viewing angle, excellent color saturation, and a very high contrast ratio.

Hitachi Europe, Ltd. (Maidenhead, UK) Display Products Group (DPG) has developed the new 19-inch 1.7 MegaPixel WSXGA+ TFT (thin-film transistor) display module. The new TX48D21VM0CAA display implements the latest evolution of Hitachi's In-Plane-Switching technology, called the IPS-Pro.

Demand for wide viewing angle and wide field of vision displays has increased in high-performance monitoring equipment. Medical imaging applications such as ultrasonic-based diagnostic and computed tomography (CT) scanning systems require highly consistent optical performance and accurate image reproduction. Contrast and color characteristics must be maintained over a wide range of viewing angles/positions. When viewed from an acute angle, a conventional TFT display will exhibit a loss of brightness and display image colors become inverted. In medical diagnostic imaging systems, the image viewed by one doctor or consultant could be different to the representation seen by a second viewing consultant in an alternative viewing position. Hitachi's IPS-Pro TFT technology overcomes the limitations of conventional TFT display technology.

The new TX48D21VM0CAA display module joins Hitachi's existing 17-inch SXGA and 21.3-inch UXGA IPS-Pro TFT displays that are targeted at high-performance medical applications. "Customers in professional markets can benefit from the high contrast and wide-viewing angles achieved by IPS-Pro technology. For applications where absolute image quality is paramount, these displays deliver unparalleled performance,” said Steve Donohoe, technical manager for Hitachi Display Products Group "The new TX48D21 display offers excellent color saturation with a very high contrast ratio. The black level of the new display combined with improved transmittance helps to provide a contrast ratio of 900:1.”

The excellent performance of IPS-Pro technology also enables the 17-inch, 19-inch, and 21.3-inch displays to be used in a wide range of high-end, multi-viewer applications that require high optical performance. All models are ideally suited for use in public information displays, security surveillance, video monitoring, and many other high-end industrial applications.

The 19-inch WSXGA+ TX48D21VM0CAA features a resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels, a contrast ratio of 900:1 and brightness of 300 cd/m². The low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) input signal interface enables up to 16.7 million colors to be displayed. The new display module has outline dimensions of 444 mm (w) x 300 mm (h) x 24 mm (d) and weighs in at 2.9 kg.

The IPS-Pro technology used in the TX48D21 display ensures viewing angles of 170o in both horizontal and vertical planes, without significant reduction in contrast. The TX48D21 features a long-lifetime cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting unit.
